Sorry for the long absence. I've had some technical difficulties which have now been resolved.
Last week I met the author of The Shadow Hero, Gene Luen Yang. He gave a fascinating talk about the history of Asian Americans in comics, both as creators and characters. Yang became fascinated by a character from the golden age of comics that he discovered while browsing the Digital Comics Museum online, which is a database of public domain comics from the early days of comic books. The character was a superhero called The Green Turtle and the story about this character is that the creator wanted him to be a Chinese superhero but the publishers wouldn't let him. So the illustrations never show the hero's face but he has a shadow shaped like a turtle with slanted eyes. The Green Turtle only had a run of 6 issues. Yang wanted to know more about this superhero so he created the origin story for him which is The Shadow Hero. As soon as I finish reading it, which I nearly and am and it's really good, I will add it to the collection.
Other books by Gene Luen Yang include American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints, Level Up, and Avatar: the Last Airbender.
